Some Facts and Figures about Pregnancy and Infant Loss in New Zealand

  • In 1999 there were 440 hospital stillbirths (from 20th week of pregnancy or more than 400 grams birth weight)
  • 129 hospital deaths less than 7 days from birth
  • 16 hospital deaths 7 - 27 days from birth.
  • The total of hospital miscarriages for 1999 was 3619. These include women whose pregnancies ended spontaneously prior to 20 weeks’ gestation.
  • The total of Live-births in hospitals throughout NZ for 1999 was 52,834.
